2013 Engage Learning Serious Game Design Summer School

The interdisciplinary topics of the Serious Game Design Summer School are related to concept design, user interface desing, interaction design, game design, game-based learning, learning experience design, user centered design, programming, project management and budgeting, professional english. All these topics are taught separately throughout the time of studies at participating institutions. All participating institutions also have Erasmus agreements on teacher and student exchange, based on compatible curricula.
The setting of SGDSS allows students a new, praxis related learning experience – to learn and directly apply knowledge while working on their products in intercultural and interdisciplinary teams, where each student brings different strengths and competencies as well as communication and collaboration specificities. Students will also benefit from international team of participating teachers, and input and coaching from international industry experts. This will create a practical learning experience, with elements of international internship, that will give good insight of learning and working at European level.
Since the industry is interested to support these type of activities, based on elaborated projects and results, students might also have opportunities to apply and get internships, that is part of curricular activities in the 6th semester.
The SGDSS activities and format are designed to improve the quality of higher education by involving industry and to foster higher international mobility and related experience of students; both being priorities of Lifelong Learning thus Erasmus program.
The Serious Game Design Summer School aims to foster knowledge, skills and transversal competencies in areas:
• Game design for smart phones and tablets
• Game industry awareness and business opportunities
• Work and collaboration in intercultural project teams
• Applied project management and time/ resource planing
• Communication and presentation
• Problem solving skills
Industry speakers at the Summer School include representatives from Unity, Valve, Rovio and Kassa Health amongst others.
