A Serious Game-based approach for situated learning of vehicular languages addressing work needs and cultural aspects
This paper presents a game-based approach for building language and cultural communication skills for use in the world of work. The paper presents the methodology used for the development of the siLang serious game for vehicular language learning. The game views languages, especially commonly understood ones, as work tools used by individuals with diverse backgrounds for effective communication towards achieving common professional goals. The game follows a situated learning approach exposing users on how vehicular languages are used by individuals with diverse backgrounds, who innevitably bring into their communication practices mother tongue transfer effects such as influences in pronunciation, syntax, or choice of words and expressions. In addition, the game introduces culturally influeced elements of every day communication that an individual may encounter when doing business in culturally rich professional environments.
